03/22/2006 - Londonderry Commercial Structure Fire

:: 151 Church Road

At 0940 hours Dauphin County Box 54-4 toned for a reported structure fire at 151 Church Road "Hill Rigging" in Londonderry Township. Company 54 (Londonderry), Engines 59 (Lower Swatara), 88-1 (Middletown), Tankers 47 (S. Hanover), 59 (Lower Swatara), Lancaster Co. 7-1 (Bainbridge), Rescue 88 and Squad 88 (Middletown) responded on the initial alarm. Additional info indicated a large propane tank on fire threatening the structure. Engine 88-1 arrived on location reporting a fully involved commercial building, requesting a 2nd alarm of tankers and a truck company. Companies immediately set up for exterior operations as Engine 54 prepared drafting from a nearby pond. Water problems and high winds hampered firefighting efforts allowing the fire to intensify significantly. Engine 59 set up a fill site at River and Church Roads and Tanker 54 arrived to draft from the pond. Ground appliances along with Truck 57's aerial stream provided the initial fire attack. Truck 46 (Hummelstown) arrived and set up on the side 1/4 area of the building and began flowing from its ladder pipe being supplied by Engine 54. Companies continued to put water on the smoky fire, being fanned by high winds, as fire consumed the entire building. During the height of the fire a portion of the one-story, metal building collapsed and many areas were in eminent danger of collapse. Command starting releasing some units around 1245 hours but crews will be on the scene for several hours with extensive overhaul.
