11/27/2005 - Pittsburgh - Boiler
Fire
45th & Allegheny River Blvd.
The call Sunday
morning came in initially as a possible transformer explosion on the 2nd floor
of the plant building at the McConway & Torley
Corp at 45th & Allegheny River. They are a facilty that provides steel products
to the railroad industry since the 1800's. After power was turned off it was
determined to be a malfunctioning coal boiler which was spewing smoke and coal
dust. Pittsburgh firefighters pulled a line into the plant building to cool the
boiler so maintenance personnel could begin assessment and repairs. Access was
not permitted on plant property to photographers due to safety concerns, but
questions were answered by plant personnel.
