| :: United Volunteer Fire
and Rescue
July/August 2005's Company of
the Month is United Volunteer Fire & Rescue.
United VFR consists of two stations, Allegheny County 135 - East McKeesport and
287 - Wall.
UVFR was established in 1998 when East McKeesport Volunteer
Fire Company #2 and Wall Volunteer Fire Department merged into a new company.
An official charter was granted in 2000.
The merger came about as the result of
a dwindling pool of volunteers in the Pittsburgh area, and a decrease in income
from fund drives and other fundraisers. It was decided that the best way to keep
the two companies afloat was to combine them, which would result in a larger
pool of volunteers, as well as the financial benefits of avoiding the costly
and wasteful duplication of fire and rescue equipment in two small towns. The
net result: a better level of fire protection for the residents of each community.
UVFR
operates two stations, one in each town. Station 135, in East McKeesport, houses
an engine, rescue, advanced life support ambulance, and a squad/command unit.
Station 287, in Wall, houses an engine, aerial truck, and a squad.
The company
has one overall fire chief, while each station has its own deputy chief and line
officers.
We currently respond to approximately 125 fire & rescue calls and
200 EMS calls each year. The majority of these alarms are in East McKeesport
and Wall, although a fair number of them are out-of-district mutual aid responses.
